149 bhories of gold ornaments stolen from bank locker in Ctg

As much as 149 bhories of gold ornaments have gone missing from a branch of Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited (IBBL).

The incident happened at Chawk Bazar branch of the IBBL in Chattogram. The current market price of each bhori of gold is Tk 1,17,177. According to the price, the value of the missing gold ornaments is Tk 1,74,59,373.

The owner of the gold ornaments alleged that the officials and employees of the bank concerned misappropriated the gold.

Meanwhile, the incident of missing of gold ornaments from Islami Bank has become a talk of the town in Chattogram.

It is learnt that Rokeya Bari, owners of the gold ornaments, understood about the theft of her ornaments after opening her locker in the Chawk Bazar branch of the IBBL on May 29 last. The incident came to light when she went to Chawk Bazar police station to file a general diary (GD). However, the Chawk Bazar Police Station has not yet registered the GD. So, the victim has decided to file a case at Chattogram court on Monday (June 3) next.

Rokeya Bari is an inhabitant of BTI Beverly Hills at Chatteswari Road in the port city.

Her stolen godl ornaments included 40 pieces bangles (large size), weiging 60 bhories; four jarwa necklace and earring sets, weighing 25 bhories; a necklace set weighing about 10 bhories; 7 necklaces weighing about 28 bhories; mfour rings weighing 15 bhories; and 30 pairs of earrings weighing 11 bhories.

Rokeya Bari said, “I have been using Chawk Bazar’s Islami Bank locker over the last 16 to 17 years. Besides, there is an account in my name. But, at about 1:30pm on Wednesday (May 29), I went to the bank to bring some ornaments from the locker. Then I requested the official concerned to open my locker. When he opened the door of the locker room with his keys, I instantly found that the locker allocated to me was opened. Then I informed the matter Chawk Bazar Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) immediately. HGe hurriedly visited the place of occurence and saw there were just 10 to 11 bhories of gold in my locker. I believe that the bank staff were involved in stealing my gold ornaments from the locker.

Demanding exemplary punishment of the persons responsible behind the theft, she asked “if we don’t feel safe about banks, whom do we trust?”

Victim Rabeya Bari’s son Riad Mohammad Marzuk said, “We went to Chawk Bazar Police Station to file a GD, but the OC told us to file a case instead of GD. So, we will file a case at Chattogram court on Monday. All preparations have been taken.”
